The creation and evolution of the park, which covers around 60 hektars, is closely tied to the family of the present owners, the Count and Countess of Oeynhausen-Sierstorpff. In 1781/82, Count Caspar Heinrich of Sierstorpff purchased the property, on which the prince-bishop of Paderborn had developed several springs for medicinal purposes in 1665. Count Sierstorpff redesigned the site in the spirit of English landscaping. By 1825, a number of timber-framed resort buildings in the local style had been erected. > more The renowned Romantic poet Friedrich Hölderlin and the famous writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff are among those that enjoyed the breathtaking view of the Egge mountain range from the park. The acclaim of the park was underlined in 2001, when Ramona Countess of Oeynhausen-Sierstorpff was given the prestigious Goldenes Lindenblatt (Golden Linden Tree Leaf) by the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landschaftskultur” (DGGL). After this award by the German Horticultural Society, the Gräfl. Park was included as a so-called anchor garden in the European Garden Heritage Network, which bestows this honour on only a few outstanding gardens in England, France, and Germany.
